The Helen May Award Welsh Club Skier of the Year 2021 – Lowri Howie
At the Welsh Championships in Llandudno Lowri was presented with this prestigious award. The award, which was decided by the Welsh Squad Selection Panel, was one of the most contended and challenging decisions to make this year with at least 10 other athletes in serious contention. In a year that has seen so many young Welsh athletes make serious improvements to their performances or returning to high level success following injury with the backdrop of a pandemic continually interrupting training and competition programmes, this award is a testament to their commitment that we celebrate all our athletes successes.
Helen May was a skiing mum who just like so many of us traveled around the country every weekend so her son Jonathan (Jonny) could race, she always had a smile and always willing to help. She sadly died in about 2001 from cancer. The award is presented to a Welsh racer who lives in Wales & can be awarded for all sorts of reasons. This year it was to recognise Lowri’s achievements for someone so young, unbeaten this summer season and managed to podium in 72 races in the last 4 years, and also for being supportive to her team mates.
It was very fitting that Lowri was presented with the trophy at her home slope enabling her to share the moment with her coaches at North Wales Snowsports and that Will Manns her coach from Team Evolution was also present.
